GainSpan-Renesas G13 TLAS Application Development Kit
Price: $2000.00

This GainSpan-RenesasG13 Wi-Fi Sensor ADK is a sensor reference application that works with the GainSpan Wi-Fi Adapter board mounted on the Renesas RDK. The Wi-Fi sensor application allows LEDs on the Renesas RDK board to be turned on/off using an iOS or Android-based smartphone or tablet and displays the temperature, light and spatial orientation sensed by the sensors on the RDK board. This ADK provides a complete suite of embedded and mobile platform APIs to greatly ease, and shorten, development time. This ADK consists of the GainSpan Wi-Fi adapter board (WAB), embedded firmware application, Renesas host application code and mobile application source code.

Renesas Electronics customers can add Wi-Fi connectivity using GainSpan's GS1011M and GS1500M low power Wi-Fi modules and develop their solutions with the Wi-Fi Adapter Boards, evaluation boards and drivers from GainSpan. All the GainSpan solutions work seamlessly with Renesas MCUs.

The Renesas Demonstration Kit (RDK) for RL78G13 is an evaluation and demonstration tool for Renesas RL78G14 microcontrollers. To aid in the evaluation of the RL78 family of microcontrollers, Renesas includes IAR's Embedded Workbench Kickstart Edition, which allows for up to 16KB of application code to be implemented on the RL78G13 RDK. To facilitate programming the RDK, the IAR tools support the Renesas TK Debugger which is on-board the RL78G13 RDK.

The GS-ADK-RenesasG13TLAS-WEB includes the Wi-Fi Adapter Board for Renesas RDK. GainSpan currently offers 2 variations of the GainSpan-Renesas Wi-Fi sensor ADKs:

Wi-Fi Adapter Board

The Wi-Fi Adapter Boards come in two configurations: the WAB-GW-GS1011MIP, an ultra-low power 802.11b solution based on the GS1011MIP and the WAB-GW-GS1500M an 802.11b/g/n solution based on the GS1500M module. The modules plug into the Renesas development boards through the Application Header Interface or PMOD connectors that are used, for example, on the RL78 and RX62/ RX63 Renesas Demo kits (RDK). For other Renesas development boards, GainSpan offers evaluation boards that interface through an RS-232 connector.

GainSpan also provides drivers for most Renesas microcontrollers including the RL78, RX62, RX63, V850, SuperH, 78K0 and 78K0R and due to their small footprint may be used with the IAR Embedded Workbench Kickstart Edition. Drivers for other Renesas MCU's are also in development. Drivers are available for UART or SPI interface.

Serial to Wi-Fi Adapter Boards provide the means to evaluate the capabilities of the GainSpan low power Wi-Fi modules, Serial to Wi-Fi embedded software as well as the development of Wi-Fi enabled devices using Renesas microcontrollers. The Serial to Wi-Fi Boards are designed to plug directly into Renesas Development Kits (RDK) through the Application Header Interface or the PMOD interface.

The Wi-Fi adapter boards are available in two configurations:

  • The WAB-GW-GS1011MIP Fi is an ultra-low power 802.11b solution based on the GainSpan GS1011MIP soldered down module. With a standby current as low as 1.2µA and a wake up latency from standby of less than 10ms, the GS1011MIP is ideal for battery operated applications
  • The WAB-GW-GS1500M supports IEEE 802.11b/g/n protocols and is based on the GainSpan GS1500M soldered down module.

The boards provide both UART and SPI interfaces, making it possible to connect to any Renesas microcontroller using simple AT commands Additionally, the boards have built-in flash for reliable over the air firmware upgrade and factory restore configuration.

The GS1011MIP and GS1500M modules mounted on the Wi-Fi Adapter Boards offer customers easy system integration and minimal use of host resources. The modules are pre-loaded with serial to Wi-Fi firmware with complete Wi-Fi functionality including security, WPS and provisioning features running on the module as well as the networking stack, an embedded HTTP server with network configuration pages, and limited AP capability for ease of provisioning. The host microcontroller is hence offloaded from Wi-Fi and networking functionalities and could be dedicated to customer applications. A small driver of only a few Kbytes is required to run on the host, making the solution suitable for even the most processing and memory constrained MCU's.

The drivers are small enough to be used with the IAR Embedded Workbench / Kickstart Edition. Drivers are currently available.

Wi-Fi Adapter Boards Benefits

  • Brings leading edge Wi-Fi and web connectivity to any platform with a microcontroller and serial HOST interface (UART or SPI)
  • Reduces development time while accelerating time to market
  • Self contained solution minimizes host processor loading
  • Easy device provisioning through ad-hoc or Wi-Fi Protected Set-up (WPS)
  • Low power consumption through dynamic power management modes:
    • Sleep and Deep Sleep
